The Bloor West Village Residents Association is concerned about the conditions that prevail around Western Tech/Ursula Franklin High Schools – specifically to do with litter and grafitti.
So, we have been talking to the principals, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the City of Toronto.
Here are the positive changes completed at Western Tech/Ursula Franklin Academy:
24 new security cameras added to reduce graffiti and vandalism
New sod on the athletic field for the students and the neighbourhood
New litter bins installed around the schools to reduce litter
Daily litter pick up in and around the school by the school cleaning staff
Murals on Bell boxes around the schools to reduce graffiti
A major landscaping project underway at Ursula Franklin Academy to make the grounds more usable and attractive for students and neighbours
Here is what the BWVRA is continuing to advocate for:
Repairing the rear tennis courts that are unusable for students and neighbours
More murals/plants installed on exposed walls. Murals on litter bins and Bell boxes to add art to our community and discourage graffiti
The City of Toronto bylaw inspectors to enforce anti-littering bylaws for students who drop litter on the streets and on neighbours’ lawns
What can you do as a neighbour:
Use the school grounds during non-school hours. If you bring your pet on school grounds please keep your pet on leash and pick up of course.
Support local school fundraising drives like the Ursula Franklin Academy landscaping improvement project.
Call TDSB Security at (416) 395-4620 or Police when you see or hear young people on school grounds in the evening when graffiti and vandalism occur.
Become a member or volunteer for the BWVRA. We need committed neighbours working towards maintaining and improving our great neighbourhood. The more voices we have the more weight the residents’ suggestions will have.
